Course Outline - Communication Skills for Leaders
The importance of effective communication skills and ‘people centred competencies’ in the Management role. We define these competencies.
Effective Communication and Outcome Thinking – communicating in a way that achieves good outcomes.
Outcome Thinking vs Reactive Thinking – Tools to use to avoid reacting and to use effective outcome thinking; Understanding & avoiding ‘trigger reactions’
Self & Self awareness – how much do we see ourselves as other do? Learning about self and increasing self awareness
Directing Self effectively – choosing our behaviours /reactions to achieve good outcomes
Language & Behaviour Styles– Assertiveness vs agressive, submissive & passive agressive behaviour. Trigger reactions to each style. Assertive language - positive confident language.
Reading & Understanding others – their Situation, Needs, Interests & Personality Style
Managing Interactions to achieve good outcomes – Choosing good outcomes; Interactive Planning Tool - to plan for any interaction - one-to-one meeting, Team Meeting, Presentation etc.
4 Personality Styles - Driver, Expressive, Relater & Methodical – they identify themselves
Influencing & persuading other styles – they plan the language, behaviour & approach for each; they role-play this
Channels of Communication – benefits & cautions of each for the Task & the Relationship
Building & positioning effective relationships – choosing an effective relationship for Clients, Colleagues, Team Members, Managers etc.
